Detecting Socioeconomic Boundary Effects on Crime Concentration Using Persistent Homology: A Multi-Attribute Filtration Approach Applied to Vancouver, Canada

IEEE World AIIoT Congress 2026 · Seattle, WA

A topology-driven method for detecting socioeconomic boundaries directly from urban data, with no pre-specified threshold. Boundary streets in Vancouver show roughly 63% higher break-and-enter incidence than interior streets (p < 0.0001).

Detecting Urban Land-Use Boundaries with Persistent Homology: A Frontage-Based Construction and Its Relation to Crime

    IEMIS 2026

A region-agnostic method that reads land use at the street frontage rather than averaging it over a block, recovering boundaries as the terminal events of a persistent homology filtration. In Vancouver, the sharpest boundaries form open corridors, and elevated crime concentrates at specific land-use transitions rather than at boundaries in general.

Spatial Decay of Burglary near Sharp Commercial-Residential Boundaries: Evidence from Rooftop-Geocoded Austin Data

    IEEE IEMCON 2026

Using address-level geocoded burglary data for Austin (2023–2025), this study measures how crime changes with distance from commercial-residential boundaries rather than treating the whole near-boundary zone as one band. Burglary per kilometre of frontage runs about four times higher right on the boundary than deep inside, a gradient that holds across all three years.
